Paris’s Choice (1670) by Charles Davenant: A Seventeenth-Century Play Preserved in a University Manuscript Miscellany

Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyse and discuss a seventeenth-century University play, Paris’s choice by Charles Davenant, provide bibliographical information about the only manuscript copy extant. piece has been preserved in miscellany poems songs, MS Rawlinson poetical 84, held at Bodleian Library, Oxford University. Based on its contents, seems have compiled New College, Oxford, it may originated member Paulet family. then came into possession an student named Giles Frampton, who was Balliol College same time as Davenant. play preceded sort title-page, featuring cast actors date 1670, which might be original performance. Whereas poet. 84 drawn interest some scholars, hitherto received minor attention. Thus, paper contains detailed description miscellany, discussion compilation ownership, play’s context composition stage history semi-diplomatic transcription play-text. My study intended contribute our knowledge Davenant’s literary production will also relevant scholars working contents or university amateur drama.
